In truth, you can use just about any Linux you would like! Linux is Linux, different distributions just change minor things the OS is the same OS! The Fedora Project is done by Red Hat just look at the copyright at the bottom of the page http://fedoraproject.org/.
Fedora is used to "test" items that haven’t been added to the finished Red Hat Releases!
Another really good option for you would be CentOS! CentOS is based on the "final" red hat releases!
http://www.centos.org/modules/tinycontent/index.php?id=2
Just check the download area.
Also check this note from them
"CentOS is designed for people who need an enterprise class OS without the cost or support of the prominent North American Enterprise Linux vendor." (you can guess who that vendor is by the fact that you download from it’s ftp servers!)
So yes, you can use them, there will be some MINOR differences to the real "red hat" but not enough to make a big difference.
Good Luck – its a fun thing to do.
