Can I lose data using the Debian Installer to use Linux?

Hi,
I’m thinking of partitioning my hard-drive so I can switch between Linux and my current OS, Vista, but I fear I may lose data from my Documents folder. and if my older brother finds out I completely switched to Linux or trashed Vista he’s gonna kill me!
So, can I lose any vital data when I partition my hard-drive?

Yes, this is definitely a possibility. However, if you are careful and resize your NTFS partition correctly, nothing bad should happen. Just make sure you do not try to install Debian over any pre-existing partitions, making sure you are either creating brand new partitions over free space or resizing your NTFS ones to free up some space, and you are good to go.
