I wont to checkout Debian5-Linux OS and I would like to know how to connect to AOL, or even If I can. AOL online help said I couldn’t. That doesn’t seem right to me.

Absolutely, you can connect to a dial-up connection with Debian.

If you are new to linux, you may want to start with Ubuntu or Kubuntu instead of Debian. Debian can be rough on a new user.
You’re correct. You can connect to the Internet regardless of who your ISP is. Your ISP doesn’t care what OS you use.
They probably said that you won’t be able to connect if you use Debian because they don’t want people calling their customer support line with *nix questions. Their customer support people only "support" Windows, but the connection itself will work on any OS.
