I want to be able to use Linux xp 2007, however before I invest in it, I want to know if it can run Mainstream software, like windows xp. Or do you have to go through a bunch of changes to get it to work. If it isnt worth the effort, I’ll dump it and go back to windows. Suggestions, pls. thank you in advance.

You can’t run Windows XP on Linux, but there is software to be able to make some of the software work, like Office and Photoshop, as well as other programs. For that, you need CrossOver Office, which is available at http://www.codeweavers.com. Google Earth and Picasa have Linux versions available. Most IM apps have Linux versions, but they haven’t been updated in a long while.
There are free alternatives, however. OpenOffice.org is an excellent replacement for MS Office. It can do everything Office can, for free and natively for Linux. This is included with most distros and is available from http://www.openoffice.org. Gaim is an awesome multiprotocol IM client for Linux, meaning you can be on AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, and GTalk all at the same time, and more. It is available at http://gaim.sf.net.

Do you want to run windows xp software, or actually run the windows xp operating system?
You can’t really run windows xp on top of linux unless you use a virtual machine but I doubt that is what you are asking, because then your virtual windows could still be messed up by viruses and spyway.
There are alot of windows apps but not all work. What are some of the mainstream software apps you want to use? If they are general, you might be able to get away with the linux naitive ones instead. I’d help you with that (you could email me) because I’m pretty good with it, I have my mother’s computer, my fathers/sisters computer, my aunt, and plenty of friends all runing linux so depending on what your needs are you might not need too much effort.
