Linux reviews applications open source from SUSE Mandrake Mandriva Centos Redhat Debian and more
Mac, Solaris or maybe some BSD variant.
Windows, Mac OS X and Linux are the 3 major operating systems out there.
Linux has so many different variations/configurations out there (Ubuntu, RedHat, Knoppix, etc)
If you are looking for something different, I would say try Solaris or Google Chrome OS. But they too are linux based as well.
Even Mac OS X is linux/unix based. So right now all you got to choose from (that has adequate/acceptable support) is Window, Mac or linux.
Mac is more universal than linux. I have used all three operating systems, and my favorite is mac by far. Ubuntu linux is advertised as the most user friendly version, but honestly, you do need some computer knowledge to get it up and running. Once everything is installed and running, its stable, but getting to that point isn’t easy. Windows is definitely the most popular OS out there, but Ive found linux and mac to be much more stable.
Generally you get what you pay for and Microsoft doesn’t want you to have many choices but there are a few out there. A project which Yahoo! has been a corporate sponsor of for a very long time (I don’t know if they still are is FreeBSD:

The syntax is similar to Linux but it requires you to be a bit more technically sophisticated. There is a live-DVD you can try it out with at:

FreeDOS is good if you are nostalgic for the old MS-DOS before M$ turned its back on power users.
A friend of mine uses this: Ubuntu
mac osx is a really good alternative.
