why is Linux Mint going Debian?

Linux Mint was based off Ubuntu, which is based off Debian. Why are they going to base it off Debian when it sort of already is? Also, where can I find Linux Mint 11 with KDE? I don’t have anything against Gnome, it’s a wonderful and stable DE but my eyes simply like KDE better.

Idiot needs help with SuSE linux 10.1?

I had Windows XP Professional and Suse Linux 10.1 "installed”–dual boot. I followed a tutorial showing me how to uninstall Linux by means of deleting partitions. Hence, drive G was created. But then when I restarted a my computer I could boot into windows because of, as I now know, grub. So I reinstalled Linux. Well! I found another tutorial telling me to do that same thing–so now I have a drive T as well as a G–and that I could then merge those partitions. So I downloaded this program: . It was the only one I could find that had a free trial and was a .exe installer file. Right, so I was forced to restart my computer . . only I could not, due to grub. So I reinstalled Linux, and now I have more partitions than I started with. How can I merge them so I only have a drive D and C (plus the removable ones) and uninstall SUSE linux? I do not have an installer CD for XP because it came pre-installed. And I can’t remember my SuSE username and password. Can any one please explain all this to me, step by step, slowly(!) and in plain English because I’m stupid and even now I barely know what I’m talking about. I’ve looked and looked and looked for tutorials and either I can’t understand them, or they don’t fit my situation. Well, before I got to the part where I put in my username and password and such–that is, right after the installation–it booted me back to the main menu and THEN took me back to the grub boot screen. Then my computer restarted myself. Just as it shut off, I pulled out the SUSE linux dvd, then as it was starting up, I hit the system recovery key–f10–on the compaq startup screen. This has never worked, but I tried, nearly out of habit. My key pressing went ignored. The grub boot screen started up-now, here’s where mine is rather unusual (at least I think it is–it didn’t look like this the first time I installed linux–this is my third time to install it):

Suse Linux 10.1
windows 1
windows 2
Floppy
Suse Linux 10.1 in safe mode.

At least, this is how I remember the menu . . My memory really is terrible. Now, normally to log onto Windows I have to use windows 2–windows 1 just takes be back to the boot screen. But I thought, might as well, and opted for windows 1. I was then taken to the Windows System Recovery console. I went throught the process . . . it kept my old programs, restored my default settings, brought back all of my OLD bookmarks (from last year) and plugins for firefox. . . . The partitions were still split up the same, but with different names. I’m scared to restart again and see what happens.

how do I change from rpm to ppc on linux?

YDL on PS3, gnome desktop
I am running Yellow Dog Linux on a PlayStation 3, the repositories are ppc files and I wan to run an rpm file and does not work, so there are ppc files

The situation is that I have been install various version in relation to the Fedora, but none of them actually worked because they constantly crashed during the booting processing. Therefore, I this is why I am using a older version known as Redhat Linux 9 which was released in 2003. Once, I finished installing it I notice that I had a slight problem which trying to set up a internet connect because it is somewhat indicating that either it does recognize the hardware or it is not set up correctly. I am constantly wondering on how to find the appropriate Ethernet driver to connect to the internet; however, at the same time how is possible to connect to internet using a USB cable modem through my USB ports? More significantly, how do you make the appropriate configuration? In addition, here are the specification of the my computer:

AMD Sempron(tm) Processor 2600+
-1.60 GHz, 1.2 GB of DDR1 RAM
-Maxtor 3 2049H2 SCSI Disk Device (20 Gigabytes)
-Western Digital WDC WD16 00JB-00REA0 SCSI Disk Device (160 GB)
-MSI K8MM-V (Motherboard)
-LAN – VIA VT6103L 10/100 Mb/s PHY

In addition, I use a Motorola SURFboard SB5100 USB Cable Modem for an internet

When i insert the disc and restart the computer then when computer restarts i get in Linux menu. And when Linux Almost Beginn installing i get error: CD Rom Was Not Found (DVD is not "present" in dvd drive). Why?? Man if stupid Microsoft can eliminate this issue Why stupid Linux creators dont eliminate this??! I am angry! Please tell me how can i solwe THIS STUPID ISSUE!? Thanks,

Linux is in violation of nearly 300 patents owned by Microsoft but the distributors and users of Linux haven’t paid a single cent in royalties to Microsoft. In fact, a lot of distributors of Linux offer their OS for free so the users are just as bad as software pirates who are causing Microsoft to lose money and have to charge more for people who legally buy Microsoft Windows instead of people who use Linux or a bootlegged copy of Windows. Why is it legal for Linux to do this?
Here’s a source to an older article. I can’t remember the link from PC World that indicates that Linux is in violation of at least 253 patents owned by Microsoft.

Computer freezes up?

I have a Compaq that has been acting up lately. I had Windows XP Home Ed. installed on it. I was having problems because windows would not even load up. I attempted to perform full recovery on the hard drive. But it would freeze on the process. I assumed it must have been a windows, so I decided wipe everything and install Linux Mandrake on that machine. The computer still freezes during the linux intallation process. What could be causing this?

Download Adobe Flash Player for Linux ?

I know what package & everything to download, but I can’t. Here’s what happens:
I click download. The box that says ‘Opening adobe-release-i1386-1.0-1.noarch.rpm’ pops up.
The options are ‘Open with’ & ‘Save file’. I’m supposed to open it, correct ? So, theres the drag down box next to ‘Open with’ for what to open it with. The selected one is ‘Archive Manager (default)’. This is the one I try to use, because it’s the default & when I looked under the other options I couldn’t find anything that seemed appropriate. So, I hit OK & two boxes pop up. One is just completely black & the other one is on top of it & it says ‘Could not open adobe-release-i1386-1.0-1.noarch.rpm. Archive type not supported.’ I have no idea what to do. I’ve looked through the other options for what to open in under, but I’m lost. PLEASE help. PLEASE. I can’t do anything if I don’t have Adobe Flash Player and it’s SO annoying. So, PLEASE help me. And, please be as detailed as possible. Thanks[:

deos linux mandriva supports exe files?

I have a small blog. Currently I run my own Linux server, but it’s a bit of a constant headache and costs /month in dedicated server (cloud VPS) charges.

I’d like to migrate this to a managed platform where somebody else is worrying about server upgrades, protection from hackers, etc, and I just get full admin rights to my own WordPress instance.

It’s important for me to keep my own domain name and to have NO third-party advertising on the site (I sell my own ads). And I’d like to keep under /month, otherwise, it becomes a hard choice compared to the dedicated server.

Is there any web hosting company that satisfies these requirements?

Thanks
