Do people want a Linux emulator?
I currently use RedHat Cygwin to provide a viable Linux emulator on my Windows desktop. It is very lacking. I have a lot of migrating from Window to Linux to do still, so I need an emulator that is more like Linux than Cygwin.
I thought about writing a Windows app, and calling it “FredHat”, or “Duck Linux”. It would run in a window under Windows. I hope .386 RPM files can be installed on it. I would closely follow RHEL were possible.
Windows could copy file to and from the file system. I would emulate the Ext4 file system by creating a “que” file that holds the permissions, for the files. If you attempt to access a file that was not previously known to the Linux emulation, the “que” file will be updated with a user defined default owner, and permissions.
What do you think?
I am already using VMware to run Centos. At present it is better running my two PC’s. One is Linux, and the other is Windows. I can samba between them.
How to get WindowsXP to see a shared linux folder?
Recently installed Debian and completely new to linux. Installed Samba package and selected the shared folder. On my windows machine, I can see the linux box but not a folder or drive under it. The folder is shared under linux with SMB (also tried NFS). The Windows machine has TCP/IP, IPX/SPX and Netbios protocols. When I bring up the add network place window, I can see the box but no folder/drive. When I right click to add it, I get a login window but no login I type in works. Tried the root and user I set up with installation.
Need help with this but also could someone recommend a complete noob guide to linux? All the sites I’ve read are not easy for complete beginers.

Evolving our government: can we apply the open-source model?
The way government works today is so last millenium: we register to vote, we elect people to represent us, and they govern from a centralized bureaucracy. Can we improve on this, esp. given modern technology?
Specifically, can we apply the "open-source" model that’s increasingly popular now in technology (Linux, Wikipedia, etc.)? If so, what would that look like? And what are the main challenges, other than massive switching costs or disruption as we migrate/updgrade from one system to another?…

SOundmax driver on suse linux?
I have recently installed suse 10.0 linux on my lenovo 3000 J115. As great as it is, I am quite dismayed that my integrated sound card (by the company soundmax…lenovo is a bit cryptic about giving the type, but the windows driver is labeled "q4aud23us13.exe"…default embedded sound card.) is not being recognized. Can anyone give me a step by step on where to find a driver and how to install it?
ALI Soundmax Card
There is a little icon on the top bar (running gnome) that looks like a speaker with a little red x next to it. I tried clicking it, and it says my sound card isnt configured. I tried configuring it, but i cannot find my card in the list of drivers that are preinstalled.
Do you like Puppy Linux?
Puppy is definitely one of my favorite distributions. I love the community, it’s easy to use, you can install .deb, .rpm, and the custom .pet files, and it runs really quickly on any hardware.

Why do I get a sick feeling when using Ubuntu Linux and Microsoft Windows VIsta?
I’m not meaning this as if they are bad, they are both great. It’s just that whenever I use them I get an odd feeling in my stomach. My mother told me that sometimes colors and designs make some people feel a little woozy.
I only get this feeling when I’m looking at extremely high detailed and clean looking interfaces. Now with Microsoft Windows XP I can look at it and not feel woozy since I can look closely at the task bar and see the grain of the granite. But with Ubuntu and Vista, I cannot. Why is this?
And no I’m not prone to seizures.

Help with installing Java on Fedora 14?
I downloaded Java from the Java website, and went into the root to try and make it an executable file, and it says "chmod: cannot access `home/Non-Admin/Downloads/jre-6u25-linux-i586-rpm.bin’: No such file or directory". Is there some sort of program I can install that will automatically turn the rpm.bin/.bin into an executable file? This is frustrating, but persistance is key.

I am running Windows Home, and I am trying to connect to a Debian Linux computer using winscp382 (A program that allows you to brows the files on another computer if you know the computers ip, username and password). I use it to connect to 2 other Debian Linus servers from the same Windows computer, and it conneccts just fine. but when I try to conecct it to the other Debian computer it gives me and error saying " Network error: Connection refused" I know that the Debian computer is conected to the same network as the Windows computer and it is conected to the internet, and I know I have the username password and ip all correct. And one more thing, the user name that I am using for the debian computer is an addministrative account.
