iam very interested in working with suse linux latest version&fedora latest version but i have no much bandwidth to download the linux os so offer me any Email id’s for recieving these linux (i.e),fedora latest version or suse latest version by postal or courier with free of cost…..
please help me!…….and give suitable remedy for it.Iam awaiting for the idea it’s urgent….please!

What’s your favorite application for Linux?

Everytime i play any kind of audio or video (more specifically with audio) my computer crashes! Its a selfmade computer with an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ CPU, 2gb of memory, and 74 gb 10,000 rpm hard drive.

The computer hasnt been running correctly ever since the power went out one day and obviously my computer shut down. When i booted it up again, it ALWAYS freezes when audio/video plays. I have updated all the drivers for both audio/video and done windows update.

I have the same problem witn windows 2000, win xp pro, win xp 64bit AND linux! Is it my motherboard or soundcard (creative audigy 2)?

One more thing to note is my motherboard has an ATI video chipset with PCI express x16 and i’m using a NVIDIA pci video card (very old school). I havnt bought a new video card (pci express ATI) due to this issue, i dont want to waste my money.

I am somewhat new to computers, but i know all the ins and out of computers. I was wondering which linux to use just for normal everyday computing like on a windows OS. I just want to explore it. I’ve heard of mandrake, ubuntu, suse, and many others. Which one should i use? And where csn i get directions on how to install it. is it easy?

Ok i heard the Linux is a great OS but i have windows XP Professional. So I want Linux but I also want to keep my windows(dual boot…I think thats what its called..idk) cause i have many video games and plan on getting a few more in a few days so I’m not sure if they will run on Linux so it would be nice to have windows there at my disposal.I want to be able to switch between linux and windows and have data like video games,music and other documents on both.

So is this possible?

How much space will this take up?

Will my PC run slower?

And what are some disadvantages of Linux running with windows like it said in the web site.
I also want to use Compiz Fusion so another reason Linux looks cool.
But will both run as if the other wasn’t even there like my games would work on windows even if they don’t run on Linux
Another thing is I don’t want to use the CD(the website i posted mentions a way that doesn’t need a CD and no extra hard drive or what ever please give it a quick look before answering(sorry for not mentioning this sooner.

I mean it can’t be that they spend their time and money to create software like Linux, Unix, GKnot, VirtualDub etc. etc. and get nothing in return.

what are the names of the other versions? which one is better to run as a live cd? can they be runned on a usb disk drive instead of a cd…..like a live usb disk drive instead of live cd…

I have heard in more then one place that Linux is not a real operating system, but that it’s just a kernel.
What do people mean by this?
If it’s not an OS, then why can I boot into a graphical gui, run applications, and type in commands? Are these not the core functions of an OS?

How do you make the boot disk for Mandriva? I downloaded the .iso files (694MB) and I mounted them to my VirtualDrive, then I copied the files to a DVDRW…but it doesn’t boot! I’ve never made a boot disk and I’m not understanding all the forums I’m reading on how to do it. Is there a premade program that can do it for me? It says to make the disk bootable…I’ve never done that either. I have Nero and it has the option to make a bootable disk but I don’t know which files to use…it says something about the extension .img to use but I can’t find that in the Mandriva package I downloaded. So basically, how do you make the boot floppy disk, boot USB stick, or boot CD/DVD disk? Which boot file(s) do I use?

I read a few tutorials on how to do it from the Terminal but that’s RIDICULOUSLY difficult. Anyways that I could do it using a RPM installation and a GUI tool to write my SQL queries??

ill start off by saying im not bias towards any of the competing operating systems i use all three windows linux and mac on a regualar basis. and i personally think that microsofts claims agist its competitors are the most inacurate pile of crap i ever heard. its almost as if microsoft’s only tactic is to convince everybody that everybody sux but them. so far every claim made by microsoft aginst its competitors i can proove to be false. i have nuthing aginst windows but this b.s. makes me want to leave windows and use linux or mac. i dont like companies that have to spread lies about ather companies just for its own sucsess. i dont dislike windows but im starting to get a bad taste for microsoft. mac takes shots at microsoft too. but they always show you evedince of their claims. and let you make your own conclution for the most part. linux is a diffrent animal yes. windows comparison to linux was ubuntu. if you never set up ubuntu the right way the the codec packs and updated distro packs then yes its true what they say. its like microsoft is making claims over sumthing they have no idea how to use themselves. these are just my opinions. im curious if anybody feels this way or if im just crazy.

because microsoft bought linux – will linux still be open source and free of charge?

I’ve Redhat Linux AS 4 and installed Oracle 10g on that.I’m getting an error "ORA-01034: Oracle not available"

Till yesterday, it was working fine, but today when i started my database by " sqlplus ‘/as sysdba’ ; i got this error.

can somebody help me in this regard.

My goal is to make mandrake pie, but I hear the plant is posionous. Is it so posionous I couldn’t eat it in pie?
Also, would one use the roots or the leaves?
Should they be fresh or dried?
Are there any other side affects I should know about?
And… is mandrake even legal in the US?

I wanna buy a new laptop but I can’t afford a Windows license at the very moment. So I was thinking of using some version of Linux, one that is easy to install and use, and as the title says, preferably similar to Windows.

My everyday applications will be word editing (preferably Microsoft Office but Open Office will also do…), network / LAN / Internet access, working with USB sticks etc.
