How do i go about it, i’m new to linux… i have tried asking on the Linux forums, i’m not getting any good responses

I reaceently installed the LInux Fedora OS in my PC and now the sound is not working, does anybody know what can I used and or do to fix the problem?

I bought a netbook but i hate winndows 7 and want to install ubuntu linux. i bought microsoft office tho and i still want to use it on ubuntu linux. how is this possible?

I’m on acer netbook linux (Fedora 8). I tried to install the xvid codec and xine media player from rpm packages. I might have deleted libxvidcore.so.4 after it said there was a conflict. Now ffmpeg isn’t working. It says :error while loading shared libraries: libxvidcore.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Please help with exact instructions and codes. I actually found this file in another directory so I’m not sure if it got deleted or not. Any links or rpm packages with this file in it would help.

Please don’t answer if you have no idea about linux. Some people try to get cute on here, but I need real answers today because I wanted to grab some songs from youtube and make a birthday cd by converting them to mp3 in ffmpeg. My dad’s B-day is tomm. so please hurry.

I would like to install Linux as my main operating system on my laptop. I currently have windows XP installed on my Compaq Presario 700. I am having major problems with my laptop and this seems like a perfect time to start over and learn some stuff about linux. I would like to wipe out everything on this laptop, Windows included and start fresh with linux. My main use of this laptop is "internet surfing/learning linux" as it is a little older and I have better computers for other applications.
Here are my system stats,
900mhz mobile AMD processor
256MB RAM
CD rom and floppy drive

So my question is, where do I start? How can I wipe out everthing on this computer and install Linux?

How do I install bittorrent in Suse Linux? I have installed it in the Package Selector but can’t find it. Also, where does it store the files it downloads (bittorrent).

Hello, I recently installed my intel pro 2200 bg wireless network adapter on Debian. It seems to work since I can see numerous wireless networks in network manager. However, when I try to connect it just keeps trying to connect and the asks me for my WEP pass phrase. I haven’t managed to connect once. What could be the problem? I know my pass phrase is correct. I am new to Linux. I went to system>preferences>network manager editor….there I entered my 128 bit pass phrase…but when I exit and check back it isn’t set to pass phrase but WEP 64/128 bit HEX …does this have something to with it or is it normal?

I am searching for a linux os that I can use best for prograaming, also I would like if it could boot nice on a netbook……..

remove this requirement. You can configure SELinux temporarily to allow
/usr/lib/sse2/libswscale.so.0.6.1 to use relocation as a workaround, until the
library is fixed. Please file a bug report
(http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/enter_bug.cgi) against this package.

Allowing Access:

If you trust /usr/lib/sse2/libswscale.so.0.6.1 to run correctly, you can change
the file context to textrel_shlib_t. "chcon -t textrel_shlib_t

context files on the system in order to preserve them even on a full relabel.

Am I able to uninstall SELinux?

I have asked about this before, in short my system has a corrupt kernel, I have no disk drive so I can’t just re-install Linux and Unetbootin will not work on this system as it is.

URPMI is the defualt package needed for changing major system settings and installing pretty much anything, when I try to start URPMI (like it should already be started) I get an error saying command not found.

How do I go about fixing this? As I am not a typical Mandriva user…

do u think enabling nvida drivers in xubuntu is a risk since xubuntu (linux) is a open source .I have already enabled it so ,any risk involved while updating xubuntu .

I know it’s an absurd question, but I purchased the Microsoft Office software through a deal at work and now I don’t know if I can even use the darn thing.

I love Linux OS (Ubuntu) on my own computer. But I tried Ubuntu on my 5 year old’s PC. He got confused and still cant get around I have to help him. Now Im taking Ubuntu off and reinstalling Windows XP on his PC. He is happy about the old OS coming back now. Anyone like else go through that too?

I’ve had so much trouble with Windows (prolly my fault for not having good anti-virus software and downloading too many torrents etc) that I’m thinking of converting. But I have no idea what I can do with Linux, if ABC application works on Windows will it also work on Linux? How about MS Office and other MS software? Also, why do so many people choose to have both on their PCs? (have I just answered my own Qn?). Advantages and disadvantages? Cheers.

From an anti-virus POV I guess Linux is much safer because most hackers will focus on windows.

In John Donne’s "Song", one of the lines reads "get with child a mandrake root." Would someone mind clarifying this line for me? I know that it is a poisonous root, and that it is shaped like a human’s lower half. Could someone elaborate on this? Thanks
