When I first read Harry Potter I was stationed in Europe and purchased the UK version. I’m currently reading the US version, I’m on book two, and I keep having situations where things are not how I remembered them. For example, I thought when Hermione first meet Harry in book one she fixed his broken glasses? Also, didn’t Neville knock himself out while replanting a mandrake? Am I just wrong, remembering the movie, or are the changes in the two versions more than just simple localization (IE changing mummy to mommy)?

I have a dell inspiron 6400/E1505 with Intel pro 3945 abg card.
I have tried linux suse 10.1 and Fedora 5.0 but it doesn’t work.

I found some procedures on google.com but they looked like for Linux-Pros!! I am just a beginer on Linux.

Can anyone help with step by steps? Or suggest which version of Linux is compatible with intel pro 3945 wireless card?

I there a Linux OS generator online any where?

Like any thing that could possibly automatically generate an Operating System?

Pros and cons of each?

Other then packaging:

variant choices of desktop environment (slim or not)
preinstalled application.
distro name
logo
community
rpm or deb.

I’m not putting down Linux I think it is a great operating system, but also see that it is run by a community that has a mindset with no real focus. Reinventing the wheal over and over and over again. Nothing wrong with doing so to learn or even share. But there should be one and only one officially supported and managed operating system for the home and business sector. The rest should only be considered results from personal development, enhancing code, features, creating new proposed software for the official version . personal use and sharing. And should be noted as such. Linking back to one officially managed standard Linux and package system. Linux could be so many more years ahead of Microsoft and OSX.

Linux is it’s own worst enemy. They think they are fighting a war against Microsoft. But the troops are only marching to drum beats of distro’s egos. So many chiefs. Microsoft is just laughing. How does Microsoft manage to sale products that are known to unstable over free products. Well its the only choice. Linux just has too……… many choices (really just pkg customization, custom names, and logos). But the average person doesn’t know that. And linux user will argue differently. But it is the same. Some better packaged then others. But the same nonetheless. None linux user think "which way do i go, which way do i go, ah yes Microsoft the choice is clear." Same thing applies for Game development Shops.

You might not agree with this scary thought ( I say scary because for some linux people its like tearing off their hearts) but what doesn’t grow eventually goes out of scope in life. Remember Eventually Microsoft, OSX will master each and every technology to great perfection. The effort of Linux will become nothing more then a college project and history knowledge. Your passions lives through the code past down and perfected, from one generation to another. Your code.

I hope the Linux community gets its act together. Or there is always PC-BSD (Free-BSD + user friendly). They are short on developers but they have one and one focus. Real centralize effort with infocies on quality all the way from the code. If I may say so.
I much rather on the deb side I much rather use Debian then any of the forks. mint, unbuntu, kubuntu, ubuntu ultimate addition, etc … Xandros, Knoppix etc… I tried ubuntu and loved it, I got curios so I tried debian. I didn’t see a difference, Other then the fact that debian is much more stable and the others are prepackaged. The difference is an illusion. Its just some logos here, name there, wall paper, prepackage so software, packaged choices of desktop, etc..

From the deb side I would go with Debian. On the rpm side I would go with Centos. Debian = Centos.

imho their should be only one official standard linux. Runned by some form consortium. If only the distros could put their ego aside.

I am new to linux.
When you install an application, after you extract it to a folder, you then type "./configure" to start the configuration before you type "make install" to actually begin the installation, right?

If some error messages comes out during the configuration, then I change my mind, not to install this application. Would the configuration step already have left some dirty things in my linux?

Dirty things mean something like the registry entries in windows.

Thank you very much for your help.

I have tried many methods of connecting the phone to computer running over linux via commands like WVDAIL etc .Could any one provide a complete procedure to connect the nokia N70 to linux(debian or ubuntu preferably) or could you suggest some tools which could simplify my task?

I found one i thought was cool called MiniMe 2008 and I got the .iso file and burned it to a disk. Then I popped it in and it didn’t work.

So that shows that that wont work….

So I figure that it’s because this laptop isn’t exactly brand new but it isn’t so old at all.

How do install this OS or how do i get another one to work?

By the way, free please…

there is fedora 10 , suse and mandrake 2008 xtreme 2 avaible, i want to know, which one of them is the latest??

I don’t want the drive to be formatted, does it actually need to be??

I have a dell inspiron 700m with a recent installation of RedHAT 9.0. I need to configure the lan/ethernet(?) to connect to internet. but it somehow just doesnt detect my network card. and i have absolutely no idea how to go about it. any help would be appreciated :)

This question has been on my mind all summer long. As I prepare for class in the fall I have been searching the interw3bs for a new laptop. This reason for wanting one is I have been using a eMac running Fedora 8-12 and I love it, but I think it is time to move on to something more portable. My three biggest concerns with buying a new notebook are in this order

Functionality (Programs "just work". and Program compatibility)(GPU, CPU,ect.)
Battery Life (7 hours or better —–> would be nice if i can get that performance on GNU?Linux)
Aesthetics (Oooooooo Shiny)

I am going to college to become an engineer. I don’t know which field of engineering but I know I want to build a better future for my home town and small villages in the 3rd world. The software I use now is all open source but don’t know if I can get away with using it in a college environment where AutoDesk and Adobe are king.

Thoughts

Thank You in advanced.
To KJ

I don’t mind Apple’s closed system when it comes to iTunes and all that I have ways around that. But, they are showing great interest in F/OSS. Even if I run Windows ( another closed system) i still have to pay for the software. Might as well go closed source with open source benefits.

Can I go about buying software and/or downloading it? And have all my on-line accounts or my browsers the same?
thx all, I’m thinking I’m going to go with that.

How do I check my computers specs on Linux?

I’ve recently made the switch from Microsoft Windows to Linux. The distribution I’m using is Fedora 7.

What I would like to know, is how do I check my systems specs? For example, on Windows you right click on My Computer and go Properties. You then get an overview or you can choose to go to the Device Manager.

Basically I’m trying to keep an eye on all my hardware to ensure its running correctly.

Thanks.

I just received new PC with dual boot, XP and Kubuntu. hope to continue running Yahoo Messenger under Kubuntu to make internet phone calls. Can’t find any info on this so far. thanks for any input. Sharon
