I have Linux Mint 7 Gloria, and I tested a malicious script (fork bomb) to see if it would adversely effect the computer, and it did crash. Could other malicious scrips meant to harm Windows harm Linux in Wine? If so, should I consider installing virus protection in Wine?

Hi I’m running my Linux under VirtualBox and the screen doesn’t want to get bigger its something like 640×480 and if I put in in full screen mode (VB) it still stays same. I guess there needs to be something adjusted in Linux right. I have experiences with X but no X just plain text mode. Thx

I want to run a single Linux application with OpenGL. I don’t want anything else to run, or anything else to be able to run. Is this possible with Arch Linux? Can OpenGL work on Arch Linux? Hope you are having a good day or night!
Sorry, I didn’t run without an OS. I meant run Arch underneath the app of course. Thanks.

There are three basic brands of computer operating systems software available today. Which do you believe is the best from the standpoint of safety, security, and privacy?
Both Microsoft and Apple are US based companies which are for-profit enterprises with secret source code.
Linux, by contrast, is not-for-profit and you can get the source-code. It seems to me that Linux is the way of the future.
Here’s my motto:
Linux is the Bestux.
What do you think?

I have just switched to Ubuntu Linux (specifically Linux Mint), and I would like to keep all of my installed applications open source so I may modify them later. I have used BitComet as my main BitTorrent client on Windows and have gotten ridiculous speeds out of it, so any client suggested must be very fast as well.
Multiple suggestions encouraged.

I’m trying to install Java version 6 Update 11 (newest version) on my Fedora Linux computer, and I’m running into some trouble. I’m following the directions on the Java website, and this is what it says:
Follow these instructions:
1. At the terminal: Type:
su
2. Enter the root password.
3. Change to the directory in which you want to install. Type:
Example: /usr/local (this is what I used)
4. Change the permission of the file you downloaded to be executable. Type:
chmod a+x jre-6u<version>-linux-i586-rpm.bin
5. Start the installation process. Type:
./jre-6u<version>-linux-i586-rpm.bin
6. The installation file creates jre-6u<version>-linux-i586.rpm file in the current directory.
7. Run the RPM command at the terminal to install the packages. Type:
rpm -iv jre-6u<version>-linux-i586.rpm
8. The JRE is installed in jre1.6.0_<version> sub-directory under the current directory. In this case, the JRE is installed in the /usr/java/jre1.6.0_<version> directory. Verify that the jre1.6.0_<version> sub-directory is listed under the current directory. Type:
ls
Now the trouble I run into is #4. I managed to make the downloaded file executable, but then when I type chmod a+x jre-6u<version>-linux-i586-rpm.bin into the terminal, it keeps telling me"chmod: cannot access `jre-6u11-linux-i586-rpm.bin’: No such file or directory"
I have no idea what to do to now, can anyone please help?
Note: I am installing the RPM file, I think this is the correct file type for this OS.
What’s the entire directory if it’s in my Downloads folder? Or on the home screen?
I tried it, and it doesn’t work… Any other ideas?

I need to know if I can actually install and run win ME INSIDE Linux. I know I can install linux inside windows, but I am not sure of the opposite. I’m currently running winME and mandrake-Linux 8.0 Powerpack Edition on a dual boot system, on a 530 mhz Intel computer. If you know of a method to install winMe under Linux, so that windows runs inside Linux, let me know.

I want to buy an eeepc (4g,2g, or 4gsurf) for a short trip abroad. I will be creating documents to email to people who have regular pc’s so I’ll have to download microsoft office. Is office compatible with eeepcs? Will I need to download a microsoft operating system such as XP in order to use office? Will having office on the eeepc slow down the system?
Thanks.

One of my HD failed, but there is data I’d like to recover. I know the HD has no data integrity (because multiple failed sectors.) But SuSE does not know that, it would spend days trying to check for disk integrity. All I need is to get pass the start up and try to get as much data off the defective disk as possible and trash it.
Can anyone help me figure out how I can skip the start up disk check?

Should they come out with a new operating system and new computer brand that would out do those? I think it’s time for a new brand of computer with type of operating system that is more reliable than those.
