Desktop Linux Applications?

Can desktop linux operating systems like GNOME run microsoft software easily? Is it a hassle to do so? I’m getting a Dell computer for university this fall and I dont wanna use Vista but I still wanna use microsoft office among other things.

I have a Linux server (Fedoracore) and I’ve seen my supervisor remote control to it from Windows XP Pro. Can anyone help me to set up a Linux server to make it available to remote control like that?

KDE On Debian Linux?

I’m trying to install the KDE (K desktop environment) on Debian Linux. I used Synaptic to download the KDE package with the +200 applications that came with it, but all I get are the applications, but no change in how the desktop looks. I’ve only been using linux for about a week, and have the most recent stable versions of linux and debian. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I’m looking for a free, open source application for Linux which will allow me to make and tweak logos for web and print. Any ideas? I know that Gimp is good for editing raster stuff but I was thinking along the lines of starting on the vector side. Any help would be much appreciated!

I belive i also need to get rid of the LILO bootloader which i belive is installed on the same partition as linux. ( i have windows installed on the other partition)

Microsoft has 95% of the desktop market, but many versions of Linux are capable and competitive operating systems. Yet, Linux hasn’t caught on with most desktop users. So, with that in mind, why hasn’t Linux caught on, and what can be done to help make Linux more widely accepted among ordinary desktop users?

Could you give me a brief summary of the pros and cons of both Debian and Gentoo Linux and what would be you recommendations. I don’t just want it for general computer use, I am a more serious computer user.

how to install java on linux?

i go to java.com and sun.com daily, but im stuck on the cd /usr/java part, it said ‘no such file or directory’, can someone tell me the problem and how to fix it? just put no links to crappy websites, cuz it never helps me, and yes, i downloaded the jre linux rpm.
oh and tell me the problem and how to fixit, then ull get 10 points as usual,k?
oh the cd /usr/java part is at the terminal.

Is Mandriva a good Linux Distribution?

I’ve been using a lot of Linux distros lately, and the only one I really like is Mandriva? Is it a good Linux distro?

When you’re using windows, you can use different programs in your computer, right? Like "MS office, MS Word, Yahoo Mail, MS Excel, etc.," if I replace Windows XP with Linux OS, will these programs also be affected? Please help me. Thanks.

How to install Debian Linux?

My computer is saying that my CD is not the proper CD for Debian installation (this is after booting with a floppy). Obviously this CD that I burnt myself that supposedly has all the installation files needed, the debian boot doesn’t recognize it properly. I was wondering if someone could show me what a debian root cd should look like. (what folders are in it, what files, etc)
Great, I’m getting somewhere. Now another thing is, what image to i use to convert it to a bootable cd?

when i installed redhat linux with windows xp, the error message will appear that no device driver was found , select the device driver.

WIthout having to learn source code to download? Do any Distributions have browser, audio, video player and built in flash players?
