How do you edit linux. Is there a program that will edit it and if so what can I use and how do you edit the source? thanks

I installed Knoppix- a portable version of Linux- which is 694 MB onto a 700 MB disk. Can Linux Applications be installed onto an external drive to be run from Knoppix?

its has several .xxx options…. like .tar, .gx , .rpm ,.bz2 .deb. im using kubuntu linux 8.10 and when i try to install using wine it tells me to enter the proxy. whats a proxy and what do i enter when it asks?

My uncle gave me a HP which he got from Walmart. He reformatted it but it doesn’t recognize any OS (it had Windows XP before). The sticker on the computer says it’s designed for Windows XP but I just bought Linux OS 2008 and want to try it. Will it screw anything up? I don’t want to pay 0+ for Windows XP or even deal with Microsoft anymore.

I am thinking about downloading Linux and was wondering this.

Further explination- My windows PC is on the second floor and on a wireless connection. I have a second PC that has linux and windows on it and it doesent have a wireless card. I will eventually take of the windows on the second PC. To get internet on this PC with Suse I want to connect it by using my other PC if possible. So is there is some way to do this… well then help please. If you think you have a method that will work then I’m open to try that too.

After installing redhat 9, am trying to configure my network options but the default adapter eth0 is inactive and wont activate! when i try to configure another adapter(eth1) or delete and try to reconfigure eth0, i get a list of possible adapters like versions of 3com but not my version which is intel(R) PRO/100 ve network connection. I have failed to find a way around this. Some one pliz help. Thanx in advance.

I tried simply formatting the partitions holding Mandriva, but the boot screen when I restart my PC didn’t go away and then it didn’t boot at all. So I reinstalled Mandriva and everything’s back to normal. But I want to free the space used by Linux.
So how do I properly unistall it, including the Operating System Selection Screen. I believe its called bootloader. How do I get rid of it?
